Been meaning to write up something on this. The Harvard basketball team actually beat a RANKED team by defeating No.17 ranked Boston College 82-70 last week. Boston College had just beaten previous #1 North Carolina the week before. Soooo…according to my crude calculations, the Harvard basketball team is better than the vaunted North Carolina Tarheels. hahaha. What makes this story have greater significance is that Harvard is led by Asian American basketball star Jeremy Lin! I first read about this dude early last year and how he was this stud high school baller and CIF Player of the Year up in the Bay. Lin dropped 27 points, 8 dimes, and SIX steals on BC. Wow! Dude was all up on Sports Center, USA Today, and every major news outlet. Congrats to him and the rest of the Harvard team!
Asian Americans need more “Jeremy Lin’s” to look up to. When i was growing up there were no Asian American basketball players to look up to and aspire to be. Even though I made the cut for the school basketball teams in junior high and high school in a majority white neighborhood, I always had that uncertainty because I was Asian American. Nobody to look up to….nobody to look at and say, “hey…that Asian dude starts on a DIVISION 1 basketball team and is the BEST player on it”. Check out this pretty interesting article on AA basketball players: http://www.sfgate.com/cgi-bin/article.cgi?f=/c/a/2008/12/15/SPD213J9RD.DTL
Anyway props to you Mr. Lin. Good stuff!
