Korean Music Update – Feb 2009 Part 1

(Sorry I have been MIA for months, but now I am back in full gear and will be more active than ever).

Though I am not Korean, I have an interest for all things Korean. I listen to Korean music 95% of the time (the remaining 5% is only because my MP3 player battery died, I am at the club, or I am driving people around who don’t like Korean music). I know there are other Korean entertainment fans reading this blog, so I wanted to share some of my favorite Korean songs and artists with you.

Lyn has come out with another wonderful album. I listen to the album everyday at work. This is one of my favorite so far. The melody is so sad but yet peaceful, I fell asleep the other night listening to this song (on-repeat).

Two of my favorite artist get together to sing this great song.
MC Mong with his stylish rapping, and K. Will with his sexy voice. If a guy serenaded to me in Korean with an awesome voice, I’d be all HIS!

Typhoon has been unnoticed in the Korean music scene in the US. The dorky looking guy can really sing, the girl can really hold her notes, and of course the infamous rapper in every group. Funny how we always make fun of how Korean music always has rapping in the middle of a ballad, but to me it just makes the song.

This one I included for the guys. Hyori is like the hottest Korean celeb, but this is only my opinion of course. On her most recent album, “U Go Girl” got the most play at the clubs and on the radio stations, but personally I think it is one of the worst songs she has, and the only reason this song does well is because of its sexy music video and her performance when singing this song. However on the same album, “Hey Mr. Big” was on there, and I found this song to be very upbeat and enjoyable, especially when your trying to pump yourself up before the club.

UPCOMING ENTRIES:
- JYP & Wonder Girls Concert @Wiltern Coverage
- Korean Music Festival @ Hollywood Bowl Coverage
- Korean Restaurant Reviews (All-u-can-eat BBQ, Korean pizza, Korean sushi, etc.)
- Korean Drama Reviews (Bad Love, Boys over Flowers, My Precious Child, East of Eden, etc.)

Share with me your opinions on here or be more interactive with me on my FB page (link below).

i think i have the case of the internet

Do you find yourself bored, constantly checking Facebook, your email, chatting and just surfing the web? I thought only students were distracted by this but I’m beginning to think students like me aren’t the only victims… You know who you are. I talk to you via facebook, gmail chat through your blackberries all the time and i KNOW you are at “work.”
We are all distracted by and personally affected by internet; we can’t barely get stuff done with it, but we can’t live without it. Checking Facebook and Facebook stalking is the worst, especially because of Facebook’s mini-feeds. They are vicious because one click after another, there is no end!!!

Last night, my roommate Bev and I were trying to study and then she got a video clip from a friend of a crazy hong kong lady screaming and swimming on the floor because she misses her flight…
“There is no humanity!”

Then, all night Bev and I were obsessed over Katy Perry’s “Thinking of You”, sung by Rose who is from NorCal (yay area)! I think we listened to the song for hours until we went to sleep.
Isn’t her voice and rendition of this song AMAZING?!? Such beautiful voice/song must have the right to distract us from doing work. We ended up youtubing, chatting, facebooking from 12-3am. Bev went to sleep at 430am, then I studied til 6am. I’m not crazy, the reason I was up that late was because I took a “nap” from 12pm to 630pm.. my sleep schedule is messed up like no other too.

Oh, and other than Rose’s Thinking of You Cover, I’m also obsessed with David Choi and Kina Grannis’ “My Time With You”. The lyrics, the beat, the melody make me so happy! They are amazing singers/songwriters and you can check them out at KOLLABORATION 9 THIS SATURDAY, where I will be a field reporter for “Blogging America’s Best Dance Crew.” For last minute Kollaboration 9 tickets go to: http://www.kollaboration.org/Tickets/Los-Angeles/Sunny-Chung-Tickets.html

Other websites that I waste time on:
This site, which my roommates reads everyday, is hilarious. At least this site makes you laugh (laughing genuinely is good for you), even though you’re not getting any work done.

If you want your daily dose of celeb gossip, this is definitely the place to go. Perez’s comments are pretty funny.

What sites do you waste your time on? Leave a comment!

Salma Hayek weds a French guy – (The Ultimate Girls’ Dream Guy)

Confessions of a Shopaholic

This past weekend the movie Confessions of a Shopaholic premiered. I have not seen so many girls attend this movie premiere since the release of The Sex and the City Movie. This is the first time I’ve ever heard of the movie, and full blown book series on this character who likes shopping too much (sounds like a dilemma for most of the girls I know).

Confessions of a Shopaholic

Along this theme of shopping and materialistic possessions: Salma Hayek got married on Valentine’s Day weekend in Paris and got herself her own ultimate materialistic provider…Francois-Henri Pinault. Not only is Pinault a billionaire, but also his family owns Gucci and Yves Saint Laurent (imagine the discounts that Salma Hayek will be getting).

The nuptials followed a rocky romance. The two met in Italy in 2006, announced their engagement and had a baby, Valentina Paloma, in September 2007. Last year they broke off their engagement but made up a few months later.

Hayek, 42, was nominated for an Oscar in 2003 for the film “Frida,” the biography of the painter Frida Kahlo, which she produced and starred in. She is one of the executive producers of the hit series “Ugly Betty” and is also the chief executive of Ventanazul, a production company she formed with Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer Inc.

Pinault, 46, is chief executive of the French luxury and retail group PPR SA, which owns high-end labels such as Gucci, Yves Saint Laurent, Balenciaga and Puma.

It’s just your typical beautiful-actress-weds-haute-couture-billionaire-on-Valentine’s-Day story. I give them 1 year tops before filing for divorce. Another 6 months for Salma Hayek to be dating someone 10 years younger than her. Not bad, younger guy and all the purses from Gucci and YSL…not a shabby deal at all!

President’s Day Weekend

I absolutely love long weekends. Come on, who doesn’t besides those that didn’t get Monday off? :)   Anyway, this past weekend was extra special since not only did it include President’s Day, it also included Valentine’s Day/Singles Awareness Day (S.A.D) as well. Whoohoo!

As JSaka shamelessly plugged, we hosted RITUAL Saturdays for our Valentine’s Day spectacular where we hooked it up with an OPEN BAR and $100 Victoria’s Secret gift cards. I guess the word really got out because when I arrived at around 10pm, the line was wrapped around the building. OMG! Talk about alcoholics and lingerie freaks. haha The night was definitely a blast with singles mingling and couples celebrating. I had one helluva night since I came to the club without a Valentine, but left the club with several. Must have been the pink shirt. :-P jk

The next night, we hosted our President’s Day Bash at LES DEUX. This was the first time that ANY Asian American promotion group has hosted an event at this Hollywood hot spot. It was certainly evident since we were at capacity in just an hour! I felt bad for everyone outside and those we turned away, but for those of us inside…it was a wonderful night. That’s for sure! :-D The crowd was sexy and classy, bottles were poppin’, drinks were flowing, and the vibe on the dance floor was AMAZING. If you weren’t there, then you missed out!

I seriously wish I missed out now because I’m still slowly recovering from the madness this past weekend. haha I’m sure I’ll be fully recovered for CABANA CLUB on Friday though since we have an OPEN BAR yet again (yay) and on Saturday, we’ll be offering FREE COVER (yay again) on guestlist for RITUAL. Let the good times roll! :-)

Until next time…this is Q signing off. Peace! v ^_^ v

Why I Dislike Valentine’s Day & How NOT To Be a Douchebag

Valentine's Day Sham

The big day is upon us: Valentine’s Day! Valentine’s Day is probably the ONLY holiday that excludes about half of the population. One side revels in relationship bliss while the other side is made acutely aware that he/she is indeed SINGLE and ALONE. Besides the fact that this holiday makes a good majority of us feel like shiet, there is another reason that I dislike Valentine’s Day. It is a COMPLETE RIP OFF.

I remember when Valentine’s day used to be the day when we all got candy and cards from our classmates. Remember when we had to make a card for EVERYBODY in class? Even the creepy kid who never bathed and always got in trouble from the teacher. I used to CHERISH those days. We’d all make our Valentine’s mailboxes out of construction paper and then go around and drop off our cards to all of them. Cute and innocent.

And that my friends has morphed into what Valentine’s Day is today. A day in which it doesn’t necessarily matter the thought but more how much MONEY we spend on our significant other (usually the guy spending money on the girl). This has become especially evident to me now that I have been living in LA for the past 15 years and have observed the sometimes shallow behavior of the women who reside here. It seems that the only thing that girls want nowadays is to be able to brag to their other girlfriends about what their bf/husband did for THEM on Valentine’s Day. Whether it be taking them to an UBER expensive restaurant or surprising them at work with a $200 bouquet of flowers (even better because their coworkers can now see how LOVED they are). Girls, don’t DENY it. I see all that shiet on Facebook…all these chicks uploading pics of a ridiculous vase of flowers sitting in their office cubicle. It really makes me sick-haha. And who’s fault is this? It’s the GUYS. Yes YOU, the douchebag reading this entry. Here’s a great example of what i mean:

And is this commercial exaggerating?  Hellz no!  These guys actually EXIST!  And then the girl gushes about what HE did for HER and then your box of chocolates from CVS doesn’t really look so great anymore does it?

Which brings me to Corporate America.  Studies have shown on average that prices INCREASE 60% for Valentine’s Day.  So you’re bleeding money for that $200 dinner, $100 dozen roses,  and $50 box of chocolates.  How outrageous!  And what’s worse is if you DON’T do this and shell out the cash, then everybody makes you feel like a:  1) big fat loser 2)  cheap bastard 3) horrible ogre who is never going to get laid.  What kind of society is this anyway?  Like seriously!

So instead of being a TOOL and falling into the clutches of social expectations and corporate American greed do this:

1)  Buy her a nice card and instead of just signing your name do take time to write something nice inside (i.e. you complete me, thanks for not dumping my loser ass, etc).

2)  Instead of getting her those played out roses, find out what her favorite flowers are and get those for her instead.  I bet they will be a helluva lot less expensive and she’ll give you sex points for being thoughtful.

3)  Make a simple dinner on Valentine’s night and then take her out to a nice dinner the next night.  Don’t fall victim to the lame “valentine’s dinner markup”.

4)  Go to RITUAL on Saturday night for the GO Productions party and hopefully your girl wins one of the $100 Victoria’s Secret gift cards being given away.  She’ll thank you later (wearing her new lingerie).

And if she’s NOT HAPPY with this then you must DUMP the hag ASAP.  I don’t care how hot she is or how good she is in the sack.  You will be a tool the rest of your life and be shitted on by her and her gf’s for being a “lousy bf” if you stay with her.  PLUS i will make fun of you every chance i get for being such a D BAG.  hee hee.

Lastly, shameless plug to come out and party with us on Valentine’s Night!

Coming to America – BOA

Lately, it seems like a lot of the Korean artist have been trying to make their way and break into the American Music Industry/Market in the states.  A few months back, Korean-pop artist Seven tried to crack the market and even before that Rain (the suppose Korean-Usher) tried his hand in headlining a performance at the Staple Center.  That event was cancelled due to “technical difficulties – translation difficulty in selling tickets.”

Coming March of 2009, the Wonder Girls will be visiting LA and NY to perform.

Last but definitely not least, BOA will also be making her debut in the states with her new US album available in store March 17th, 2009 (or download you cheap bastards).  It’s clear that she has an up hill battle given the previous failures of her fellow peers and in addition, given the economic turmoil that this country is sinking into not to mention the crippling music industry she has an enormous challenge at hand.  Then again, at the age of a grisly 22, she’s a veteran in the music industry.  This very talented tri-lingual girl (Japanese, Korean, and English) might possibly have something else that none of these performers have…commercial girly appeal reminiscent of Britney Spears, Jessica Simpson, etc. as evident in this recent interview by Nylon Magazine.

This isn’t your ordinary house this is MYHOUSE

We’ve all had our own share of what we thought would be “a really cool club concept.”  My was ”City Jungle” where trained monkey would be bartenders and gorillas would be security guards at the door.  Anyhow, that idea and story is for another time to dig into.  If you’re a Hollywood club rat you probably have heard or most likely already checked out David Judaken’s latest club venture with his grand opening of MyHouse designed by Dodd Mitchell.  David Judaken is the owner of Mood, Opera + Crimson, as well as the former Garden of Eden which is now remodeled and transformed into MyHouse http://www.myhousehollywood.com/.  Dodd Mitchell http://www.doddmitchell.com/ has been credited for such innovative designs Dolce in West Hollywood, Falcon in Hollywood, Roosevelt Hotel in Hollywood, Double Seven Lounge in New York, etc.  The concept of the venue is being a bachelor with the state of the art venue as residence and throwing the ultimate house party. Imagine if you will fur beds, jacuzzi, full kitchen, etc.  The concept is a bachelor coming home and throwing a party with his finest girlfriends and guy friends.  The waitress are dressed down and wear “their” man’s guy dress shirt in a very SEXY way.  It remains to be seen if this idea is truly innovative or another generic club flash in the pan concept.  So far, it seems the Hollywood party crowd is digging it but then again we just migrate from one club to another like changing in and out of our daily undies.  Only time will tell but it has some big shoes to fill in given the historical success of its predecessor Garden of Eden.
